What are Climate Refuges?

Climate Refuge symbol

Climate Refuges are spaces prepared to offer comfort and protection during periods of intense heat. They can be air-conditioned indoor spaces or outdoor spaces with shade and vegetation, allowing people to rest and safely recover their wellbeing.

The spaces that are part of the Climate Refuge Network are identified with this symbol.

Why do they matter?

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense. During these periods, it is important to have access to places that provide thermal comfort and protection.

The Climate Refuge | Stay Cool Network brings together spaces prepared to provide thermal comfort, rest and hydration during periods of intense heat, contributing to the wellbeing and safety of residents and visitors.

Travelling safely in the heat

Heatwaves can affect anyone, especially during periods of prolonged exposure to the sun and high temperatures.

Plan your activities to protect your health and enjoy the day with greater comfort and safety.

Before you leave
  • Check the weather forecast.
  • Always carry water with you.
  • Use sunscreen, a hat and light clothing.
  • Identify available climate refuges in advance.
During the day
  • Prefer outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure between 11am and 5pm.
  • Take regular breaks in cool places.
  • Stay hydrated.
